Summary/Abstract: Formal tests described in the paper show that the word {aż} can be recognised as a substitute of the conjunction że (within a certain range of its use), cf. {Krzyczy, aż uszy bolą – Krzyczy, że uszy bolą} (lit. ‘He is screaming so loud that my ears ache’). This fact has been used as an argument for the conjunctional interpretation of {aż} as in the examined sentences. However, they have to be distinguished from sentences of the following type: {Krzyczy, że aż uszy bolą}, which have a similar meaning and in which {że} is used as a conjunction and the word {aż} has a different role. Therefore, {aż} used as a conjunction has been identified only in contexts in which it functions analogically to {że}, but does not include it. Therefore, phrases such as {aż uszy bolą} in the examined type of sentences have been interpreted as dependent sentential phrases of the type SPaż.
