Summary/Abstract: The career paths of the high officials of European integration had been simplified and idealised. It seems accepted by all, that the past actions of the officials of European integration reflected that same European ideal of peace and democracy brandished by European institutions (European Coal and Steel Community -ECSC, European Economic Community) after the war. Biographical analysis, when applied to the members of the High Authority of the ECSC for example, shows that the careers of these men who lived in a century of wars, nationalisms, and ideological struggles, did not match the image of the European Communities themselves. Their career paths reflect the complex and turbulent history of the XXth century. The author gives historical overview of the biographies of the members of the highest authority of the European Community, from the perspective of today.
