Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is, through the debate on the role and identity of EU with regard to other countries, to analyse the promotion of the principle of protection and respect of the minorities, through the perspective of the Copenhagen criteria for EU membership. The author’s argument is that there is certain inconsistency in the promotion of this principle on EU level and what is promoted (“exported”) as standard in the candidate countries. From the aspect of the concept of the normative power of EU, the paper further explains that the legitimacy of the principle and its acceptance in the country is largely dependent on its “reception” and respect within EU, which causes certain deviations in the socialization of this principle in the sociopolitical structure on domestic level in the enlargement process.
