Summary/Abstract: This essay traces down the evolution, causes, and consequences of the so-called contemporary „Eurocrisis”. It argues that there are two correlated dynamics that led to the unfolding of the economic meltdown on the old continent: firstly, a structural tension between labor and capital, reflected in the increasing pressure on wages all over Europe as the last resource for boosting international competitiveness; secondly, a rather geopolitical tension between the core of the Eurozone (especially Germany) and the periphery, whereby the surpluses of the former are recycled through financialisation and lent to the periphery, thus vastly increasing the already existing gaps between the periphery and the core.
