Summary/Abstract: The contemporary society is characterized by two complementary phenomena – integration and reassertion of the ethnic and national identities – that become manifest simultaneously and with a comparable force, but that intersect in fact with the problem of globalization. The integration itself in the European space is a step towards the integration in the globalization circuit. The transformation of the international system and the globalization processes have led to a powerful revitalization trend of the differences, to a new perception of the identities. Actually, globalization readdresses the problem of identity. Globalization and identity, as complementary aspects, can represent the terms of a synthesis of the future. Qualitative transformation refers to the transition from internationalization, through intensified exchanges, to the opening of frontiers and the creation of a global market that overcomes the state borders. The long term effects of the globalization process over the international community cannot be asserted with certainty, but it is clear that the globalization process has both a positive impact and a negative one. Thus, the globalization phenomenon can be considered a future stage of humanity’s general economic, political and cultural development process, but also a process of widening, deepening and hastening of the global interconnection, taking place in a space of change.
