Intertextuality in George Eliot’s Novels: Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda and Felix Holt, the Radical

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on three of George Eliot’s novels and the features of intertextuality in Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda, Felix Holt, the Radical. These characteristics appear through different techniques: the use of words originating from foreign languages; introducing names of famous people at the époque that the novel refers to, well-known political figures who fought for the rights of man and woman, as well as names of prominent composers. The theoretical background consists of numerous books in various domains as sociology, psychology and literature. Among the writers and editors, there are authors, such as: Zygmunt Bauman, Chris Barker, Carolyn Dever, ed. Smadar Lavie & Ted Swedenburg, Kathryn Woodward. The article aims at bringing to light various examples taken from George Eliot’s novels with the goal of familiarising the public with her work, but also with the goal of reminding the public of the existence of Victorian writers and writings.
