Summary/Abstract: The notoriously changeable and unpredictable weather of the British Isles has provided a constant preoccupation for its inhabitants since time immemorial. Their acute awareness of its effects has become evident not only in their outlook upon life, but also in their way of thinking and its linguistic expression: language, particularly idioms. The present paper is not an attempt to exhaustively list all the English expressions that contain references to the weather, but to present the probable or possible origin of a few more interesting or intriguing ‘specimens’.
