KANT’S ENLIGHTENMENT AND THE CONCEPT OF “CRITIQUE” IN THE LATE FOUCAULDIAN WRITINGS

Summary/Abstract: Kant’s Enlightenment and the Concept of “Critique” in the Late Foucauldian Writings. This article focuses on the concept of “critique” in Foucault’s late philosophy. In order to fully elucidate the status of this term, we discuss its proximity with the Kantian notion of Enlightenment. With this aim in mind, two other concepts are in turn made use of in our analyses: the “state of immaturity” (Kant) and the “governmentalization” (Foucault). The hypothesis that we argue for in this work tries to highlight a similarity between the way the process of Enlightenment relates to the state of immaturity and manner in which the labor of critique relates to the process of “governmentalization”. By doing this, our goal is to show that the late Foucaldian philosophy could be seen as a prolongation of the modern project of Enlightenment.
