Remarks regarding Occasional Word-formation and Gender of Animate Nouns

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the problem of the grammatical gender of animated nouns, paying special attention to epicene nouns and to the occasional formation of non-standard feminine nouns from masculine ones and vice versa. Starting from a corpus of nouns selected from newspapers and periodicals, we propose a typology of nouns likely to be affected by gender changes and of methods employed in this process (suffixation, back-formation).
