Summary/Abstract: Abstract: The depiction of the child in the Polish press is bipolar. On the one hand themessage is dominated by portrayals of the child as an object of continual concern of parents who are doing their best to ensure good education, provide care, encourage the development of interests and supply attractive and fashionable commodities. Here the child comes through as a person who does not have much leisure time, a large-city consumer, recipient of pop culture and the patterns it propagates. At the other extreme we have many publications dealing with children from the social margin in the broad sense of the word. The media image of these children includes parental inefficiency, poverty, chronic disease, pathology and crime (their parents’ or their own). This is a portrait of the child whose childhood is full of strife, poverty, violence and lack of perspectives for the future.
