Summary/Abstract: After he became president of the Russian Federation in 1999, Vladimir Putin attempted to restore Russia’s influence in the world. During this period, Russian energy resources (oil and gas) became a weapon in the country’s foreign policy. By means of her resources, Russia can control economically the countries of Europe and Central Asia. Vladimir Putin started a war against terrorism after 9/11. Russia is a partner in the war against international terrorism, together with NATO and the USA. NATO and Russia cooperate in the war against terrorism, in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and in other military aspects. Russia also established a strategic partnership with China, and the two countries collaborate in the military and economic fields.
