Summary/Abstract: Father Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange OP, the great Thomist of last century, who lived the Holy Mass as the spiritual center of his life, made also an important contribution to the discussion on the essence of the Eucharistic sacrifice. His theory, contained mainly in his works L’Amour de Dieu et la Croix de Jésus and Le Sauveur et son amour pour nous, emphasizes – under an influence of the doctrine of M. Lepin – the everlasting interior oblation of the Heart of Jesus. This interior oblation has its physical expression on the Cross and its sacramental expression on the altar. The Garrigou-Lagrange’s theory, which has found its supporters, has some beautiful elements, but also some imperfections, namely it jumps over the sacramental order. There is a lack of the correspondence between the external signs and the signified reality, because the words of the Eucharistic consecration and the separated species don’t signify the internal oblation of Jesus, rather the immolation of the Cross. It is better to say – with St. Thomas Aquinas –, that the formal aspect of the Eucharistic sacrifice consists in the virtue of the passion of Christ.
