Summary/Abstract: The paper introduces the Institute and reviews its twenty-year history and present role consisting in providing a forum to objectively assess the status and role of East/Central European and Balkan regions in the global era, and making an in-depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities that these countries present for the national development of South Korea from various perspectives. The Institute is the only academic institution in South Korea of its kind as well as its Department of Czech studies is the only one providing Czech on the university level in the whole country. The main topics presented in the linguistic and literary papers in September 2011 at the Institute’s international conference celebrating its 20th anniversary are also presented and briefly commented in the paper.
