Summary/Abstract: The deportation of Czernowitz Jews took place in two stages: between October 13 to November 15, 1941 and then in 1942, in June and September. The remaining of more than 20.000 Jews in the city at the end of 1941 is the consequence of many factors, among them the actions of the Sorting and Revision commissions led by the city mayor, dr. Traian Popovici and the Military Commander of Bukovina, general Vasile Ionescu. General Ionescu helped Popovici save from deportation many Jewish families by placing them on the lists of indispensable professionals. As a result, the mayor was dismissed and the general forced to retire. Two investigations followed, the first one ordered by Ion Antonescu in early 1942 and the other as part of postwar trials. Both inquiries demonstrated that the former Military Commander was not just a tool of the Antonescu regime, but an adversary of inhumanity and deportations.
