Summary/Abstract: In the late 19th and first quarter of the 20th century, the second Czech and German clinics of internal medicine were headed by three strong and notable personalities: the Czech clinic by Emerich Maixner and Josef Thomayer, the German one by Rudolf Jaksch. All these men were respected scientists. Maixner and Thomayer published almost exclusively in Czech, and that is why their work remained largely unknown among scientists abroad. Jaksch’s writings, in German, were remarkable and his key study was repeatedly translated into English and other languages. Both the second Czech and German clinic were at first housed in unsuitable premises in the old part of the General Hospital, and all three heads of clinics fought for better working conditions. But only Jaksch succeeded, in 1899/1900, in getting for his clinic modern premises in the newly built ‘jubilee’ or ‘German’ pavilion within the hospital grounds. The collaboration between the Czech and the German clinic was minimal and no mutual quotations of their basic works were discovered.
