Summary/Abstract: The Enlightenment ideology that lies at the foundations of the ideology supporting the contemporary state focuses on the individual and affirms the state as the protector of individual rights, while the family is regarded only as a creation of individuals recognized by the state. This presentation explores the philosophical and theological grounds for recognizing the family as an independent social reality with a moral integrity of its own, which cannot be reduced to the interests of either the individual or the state.
