Summary/Abstract: Ian McEwan poses the following questions: what is the most important criterion for selection in literary science writing – accuracy or style? Or special pleasure to be shared, when a science writer leads us towards the light of a powerful idea which in turn opens avenues of exploration and discovery? He states that Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene stood at the beginning of a golden age of a long history of literary science writing, in which the pursuit of truth and the excitement of new ideas is conveyed in luminous prose.
