The White Fields of Black Mother of God: Mythology and History of the Cult to the Miraculous Icon of God’s Mother in Nessebar

Summary/Abstract: Every year on August 15-th the town of Nessebar celebrates its feast - The death of Mother of God. The ancient Balkan myth about the virgin – keeper of town’s walls is mixed with the folklore legends about the saint-healer of mental diseases and with the Christian cult to the holy icon – patron saint of the town. This mixture of beliefs coming from different times gives birth to the cult of Black Mother of God and the ritual walk with this icon around the town – a tradition practiced even nowadays.
