Summary/Abstract: In English literary history the two decades 1890 - 1900 and 1900 -1910 do not fully belong either to the period that precedes them or to the one that follows them; and yet they are rarely considered as one integral temporal unit. Significantly it even appears that the earlier of these two decades is characterized by features belonging to the Modernist period (after 1910) whereas the later decade is remindful of 19th century Victorianism. This essay studies a) whether the literature in each of the two decades possesses some characteristic features that distinguish it from other periods; b) how the two decades relate to each other and whether there is some continuity between them in terms of their characteristic features; c) how the two decades taken together relate to the periods before and after. The author believes that in the writing of the two decades some potential coherence can be discerned and argues that the period migth justifiably be named "English Protomodernism".
