Multicultural heritage of Łódź and the contemporary urban landscape

Summary/Abstract: Łódź jest miastem, na którego rozwój istotny, a niekiedy decydujący wpływ mieli – obok Polaków – przedstawiciele innych narodowości, religii i kultur. To oni w znacznym stopniu określili specyficzne oblicze miasta, pozostawiając w jego współczesnym krajobrazie wiele ważnych obiektów, symboli i miejsc. Wyjątkowych i jedynych w swoim wyrazie, nadających specyficzne urbanistyczno-architektoniczne oblicze miastu, które stało się dla wielu z nich „ziemią obiecaną” i „domem rodzinnym” i z którym się utożsamiali. Łódź is a city, whose development was significantly, sometimes decisively, influenced not only by Poles, but also by the representatives of other nationalities, religions and cultures. They largely determined the specific image of the city, leaving numerous important objects, symbols and places in its contemporary landscape. Such artifacts are unique in their expression and shape the characteristic urban and architectural image of the city that became the “promised land” or the “family home” for many of them and with which they identified.
