Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to assess the semantic differential scale of three analyzed French lexemes: tristesse (‘sadness’), chagrin (‘worry, care, trouble’) and peine (‘suffering, agony’). The above considerations are firmly fixed within the paradigm of lexical and cognitive semantics and indicate a strong correlation between the meaning of analyzed lexemes and their syntactic properties. The aforementioned lexemes share a common semantic property of negative emotions within the semantic domain of sadness. Such parameters as, i.a. the number of actants, reasons evoking emotions, intensity and duration of emotions, or external and internal symptoms of emotions have been established as common characteristics that allow us to successfully define the analyzed lexemes. Simultaneously, the reason for which semantic differences among the analyzed instances occur is ascribed to different values found in seemingly universal parameters. Syntactic constructions, collocations and phraseologisms found in dictionaries, press texts and contemporary literature have become the object and basis of the presented analysis.
