Differences between the manuscripts of Livre du corps de Policie by Christine de Pizan

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to compare several versions of the manuscripts of Livre du corps de Policie by Christine de Pizan, which can be divided into two groups of texts: one including manuscripts most faithful to the original with few inconsistencies, the other comprising less faithful texts rather distant from the original. Both groups revealed not only structural and semantic differences introduced by the author herself, but also unavoidable changes resulting from the transcription process. Christine de Pizan supervised copyists’ work and thus could detect errors and make necessary alterations. The changes in the manuscripts concerned mainly syntax (i.e. omission of words and sentences and changes in phrase structure) and less often spelling and choice of a more accurate term.
