Historical Review of the Census of Agricultural Holdings in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: An extensive review and periodization of statistical surveys of land ownership and agricultural holdings in Bulgaria is made in this article. It covers the period from the emergence of agricultural statistics until today in order to identify both the asymmetries and the general regularities of the observation’s scope, organization and methodology. Comparative analysis of the scope and object under observation is made, and basic units and signs are defined. The state of modern agricultural statistics is examined and the specific problems for the harmonization of these observations with European standards are outlined. The historical review and assessment of the methodology and organization of the census of agricultural holdings is found to be a necessary prerequisite for the provision of empirical and statistical information for research in agriculture.
