Summary/Abstract: Man’s key role in the economy provokes the interest of many researchers. The thorough study of this problem requires a detailed knowledge of human capital theory. Like most theories, it also has its deep roots in the remote past. This article takes a retrospective look at economic thought in antiquity, presenting man as an economic entity. The traditions and experience of ancient eastern societies are explored (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China), and the upbringing, education and production activity of people in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are investigated. The role of the family in regard to the initial physical and intellectual development of man is revealed; the importance of school as an organized form of adolescent training is formulated; the understanding of theoretical knowledge and practical application is outlined; the emphasis that ancient people placed on the profession as a basis of public planning and the well-being of the populace is demonstrated; the embryonic form of the proposal for measuring human capital is presented.
