Summary/Abstract: The author publishes a letter of Peter the Great to the St. Petersburg Governor-General A.D. Menshikov. The letter was written on January 27 (February 7), 1719 from the premises of Petrovsky foundry. In this written source, Peter the Great thanks A. D. Menshikov for being a founder of the foundry (1703). Petrovsky foundry played a major role in supplying the Russian navy with iron products. The story of the city Petrozavodsk starts on the date when a construction of Petrovsky foundry was commenced on the banks of Onega Lake.
