Summary/Abstract: On the pattern of the great number works printed during last decade, which has iluminated problems conected with nation and national movements, author is presenting the basical dilemas and the basical points of agreement and disagreement in this field. The main conclusions concerning sociological explanation ofthe nation are that it is a modern category - a product of modernisation's processes, but also a evolutive category - conected with all precede forms of communality through the natural human need for life in and for identification with the community. The nationalism as a complex phenomenon, insepareble from modern existence of nation is considered both in structural and historical perspective - with the view of its conection with religion, language and ethnicity, as with the view of its manifestation in ''old" and ''new" nations.
