Summary/Abstract: The type of research that is today commonly known as historic building survey emerged in the wake of the growing interest in the preservation of historic buildings since the mid 19th century. Such investigation of Modern Movement buildings has, however, been drawing attention for only the last few decades. The architectural practice of the Dutch architect Wessel de Jonge has been pioneering in the development of research and restoration methodologies for Modern Movement buildings. The increased availability of external sources like architectural drawings and photographic material initially seemed to make research into the actual buildings superfluous. However, the restoration process for several Modern Movement buildings has demonstrated that physical research into the buildings themselves is just as necessary as the exploration of archives.
