On the Chemtrials

Summary/Abstract: The present article traces the movement of “chemtrails” conspiracy beliefs from the US and their subsequent integration within Bulgarian public discourse, where they obtain a new meaning. It also investigates the ways in which some specific conspiracy “theorists” get involved with various social and ecological campaigns and participate in the formation of these civil society mobilizations. The article argues that there are sociohistorical factors that inform such kind of beliefs. These factors, it is argued, include the contemporary exclusion from the political processes, the crisis of political representation, as well as the crisis of legitimacy of the scientific and rational authorities due to their marketization and commercialization.
