Summary/Abstract: Our study approaches Ioan Slavici’s journalistic and political activity, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The main idea of this study, which is based on information from the period mentioned above, is that Ioan Slavici adheres to the ideas and doctrines that circulated in Europe in that epoch, as an adept of Tribunism that interfered with the STUDII DE STIINłĂ SI CULTURĂ ANUL IV, NR. 4 (15), DECEMBRIE 2008 76 Junimism (conservators) and the Liberalism. Ioan Slavici who was a writer, a journalist and author of school books activated in a very complex historical context marked by the process of formation and completion of state unity in Eastern and Central Europe. He strongly opposed the politics of assimilation and denationalization developed by the central authorities from Budapest, but he permanently militated for tolerance and mutual understanding between Romanians, Hungarians and the other nationalities within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
