Summary/Abstract: This paper presents research on socialization problems of secondary school students in the early 20th century. It is based on the texts of handwritten journals and newspapers from Vyborg eight-year commercial school (St. Petersburg). In the paper the texts are considered as a social act, i.e. as one of the mechanisms of socialization and not merely as an indicator of it. This paper shows some peculiarities of students’ perceptions of discourse problems typical for the intelligentsia. Thus, when reflecting on the social life of their own school, students would frequently come to the idea that compulsion could be required for a common cause and that self-sacrifice was of great importance. This approach was typical for previous times and in the early 20th century it was already put in doubt, but for a lot of young people it was this approach that remained preferable. Thus, the school handwritten press demonstrates peculiar features of socialization typical for Russian intelligentsia at the turn of the 19th - 20th century and can be used as a new additional source for microhistorical research.
