Summary/Abstract: The article analyses verbal associations evoked by the names of animals, both the domesticated and the wild ones. The results obtained are based on the experiment in which forty Lithuanian informants (16-18 year old pupils) participated. The data obtained shows that the names of animals evoked mainly one-word associations; the recipients tended to react by a word connected with the word-stimulus on a paradigmatic rather than on a syntactic basis. Therefore, the results of this research in a way contradict the earlier ones which claimed that the Lithuanians usually react to a word-stimulus by syntagmatic associations. Consequently, the results obtained require further research and confirmation.
