Summary/Abstract: In the diversity of discourses on postmodernism, the concept “carnival” is often assigned to postmodernism as one of its essential attributes to specify changes in literature, art and culture. In the philosophical discourse, however, “carnival” isn’t widely employed. The claim stated in the article is that the metaphor of “carnival” denotes a specific philosophical position and existential attitude. The point of the article is to traverse and describe the metaphor of “carnival”, and to assess its suitability for the description of experiential relation to reality. The author formulates a thesis that carnival is more than the position of “jolly” philosophy referring to manifestation of semblance. It is an existential attitude. In the article, the possibility to modify the author’s identity with the help of a mask-pseudonym is analysed. The demonstrative character of parody is described, the logical structure of paradox as a true form of carnival discourse is noted, the provocative character of irony is analyzed.
