Summary/Abstract: The first part of this study examines blood feuds as a natural indication, corresponding to the clan and tribal way of life. This is followed by a description of the customs, which settled the details as to who was to the object of revenge, and why, and who, where and how the revenge was to be carried out. The second part deals with the reconciliation of the hostile parties and the cessation of hostilities. The influence of blood feuds on people who are the subject and object of such feuds is then described: their behaviour becomes more moderate; they build special towers as houses, which people threatened by a blood feud use as a defence against attack. Fear of revenge has been known to force a large part of the population to leave their birth place and settle elsewhere. In conclusion it is shown that revenge, which is even more cruel than the classical 'an eye for an eye' or 'a head for a head' also exists among certain civilized peoples in our own day.
