Summary/Abstract: In his "Memories" ["Uspomene"], a memoir book that had remained unpublished until relatively recently (1988), Vladimir Jovanović, in the opinion of the author of this paper, created a unique representation of the transformation of the Serbian society in the second half of the 20th century. As an intellectual involved in politics (he participated in the well-known session of the St. Andrea Assembly in 1885), and as a politician among intellectuals, Jovanović developed his socio-political and socio-historical views by considering the "folk forces and virtues" to be the key factors of social transformation and of achieving national goals, but also critically evaluated the often pernicious impact of foreign influence. Despite being open to modern ideas, above all those emerging in the West, this liberal patriot, as he referred to himself and to others holding similar views, Jovanović had no grudge against traditional national values. Quite the contarary - he thought of them as the "corner-stone of Serbian power and skill".
