Summary/Abstract: This paper will explore the current human rights situation of Romani women in south-eastern Europe. While the majority societies marginalize them because of their ethnicity and prevailing negative stereotypes, within Romani households gender discrimination stemming from patriarchal cultural patterns furthermore aggravates their situation. The paper will concentrate on racial and gender discrimination against Romani women in several important areas: education, employment, health, violence against women, trafficking, political participation, and citizenship. The paper will also describe some good practices from the civil society, primarily those initiated by Romani women's organizations, aimed at improving the situation of Romani women in the region.
