Summary/Abstract: The originality most cherished in Sanskrit kāvya is the ability to invent new variations to what are already stock motifs. It is these variations which display the imagination and the creativity of a poet. This paper studies the motif of the pearl necklace the breaking of which suggests tempestuous love play. Like many others, this motif too was first employed by Kālidāsa. Subsequent poets introduced several ingenious variations. Two such variations appear in the form of problems in the mathematical works of Śrīdhara and Mahāvīra
