Summary/Abstract: Racism and Xenophobia are common phenomena in modern society due to the fact that our world nowadays is confusing and encounters a lot of hardships. Therefore, the fear caused by all these aspects may subconsciously be transferred to foreigners or to any other elements identified as foreign. In this way, xenophobia is manifested. The most extreme expression of xenophobia is defined as racism. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the existence or the possible outburst of racism and xenophobia in the local community of Rethymno, Crete. A questionnaire was used as a research tool and it was given to 50 subjects, residents in the city of Rethymno. The main conclusion drawn from this research was that age, gender and living with foreigners, are important factors for the "birth" and "death" of racism and xenophobia in society.
