Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the Western construction and objectivization of the Balkans as a metageographical and metaphorical area. The paper is theoretically based on postcolonial and subaltern studies. The author works with the concepts of Orientalism and Balkanism and compares these two categories considering the specific ways of Western literary representations of the Balkans and the Orient. The author argues that the Western discursive approach towards the Balkans is basically analogical to the Western approach towards its colonies and despite the fact that the Balkans were never a part of any colonial empire, they became an appropriate space not only for the imaginative but also for the practical projection of Western colonial ambitions.
