Summary/Abstract: Here are reproduced some travel notes of 1853 written by Laurence Oliphant, after having visited Russia, the Crimea and Moldavia: The Russian Shores of the Black Sea (reprint 1998). The author was very knowledgeable about the countries he crossed, where he assiduously collected information, because he was already foreseeing the Crimean War. He provided an evidence of the state of the Mangoup ruins at that time.
