Summary/Abstract: Popular culture is a realm that is heavily mythologized, and generally considered to be shallow and worthless. This attitude reflects a lack of understanding of popular culture texts, treating them literally, and a misunderstanding of the conventions they use. Drawing on the theories of John Fiske, I focus attention on the still strong belief that popular culture imposes its messages on passive, unthinking consumers. I indicate that this is related to a contempt for its audiences. Therefore, like Fiske, I propose we reject the category of “mass culture” and consider popular culture as a means of promoting progress. As an example of a cultural text that breaks stereotypes, I focus on the Polish sitcom Ranczo (directed by Wojciech Adamczyk).
