Summary/Abstract: The text combines the surreal pastiche of Ibero-American fiction in the style of magic realism with a critical essay on local cultural politics. The story’s protagonist is a charismatic mayor who, in pursuit of popularity, seeks to gratify the basest of tastes, which gradually leads to his city’s decline; following this, he falls victim to a mysterious illness. The author reflects on culturephobia in elites, concluding that the real source of their fear lies in the unpredictable power of art, which can unleash ridicule and reveal the significance of large-scale capital in maintaining the good reputation of many businessmen and politicians.
