Summary/Abstract: Although a small country, Slovenia is among those states which exert considerable influence in the Western Balkans, an area attracting the European Union’s most intense activity outside its boundaries (enlargement process, missions, financial assistance). The country’s strong position in the region rests on a very extensive economic involvement. The main factor determining the effectiveness of Slovenian policy towards the Western Balkans is the consensus among EU member states about the region’s European integration. But Slovenia’s potential is affected by an unprecedented deterioration of its relations with Croatia, triggered by a dispute over the course of the sea border and lack of agreement among EU member states on the pace of enlargement.
