Summary/Abstract: National identity is a reflection of national self-awareness in behaviour and national character. Since students hold the traditional national characteristics, at the same time, not being burdened with the preceding realia, taboos, stereotypes and prejudices, their social and public passivity or activity is an indicator for the development and the current contents of national identity. This research aims through comparative description of the formation phases and concrete expression of the national identity of Bulgarian and Ukrainian students to show the specific reflection of the long social transition on the national self-awareness and behaviour of the two sub-ethnic communities.
