Summary/Abstract: This article provides an analysis of the character and development of the conflictin East Timor from the perspective of conflict resolution theory. It covers the period from 1974, when the key East Timorese parties were formed, until 2002, when the conflict was terminated with the assistance of a UN peacekeeping mission.Beginning with an overview of relevant conflict resolution theory concepts, the article proceeds to discuss the multidimensional nature of the conflictin EastTimor and the difficulties with its categorization according to the primary actors and the conflict causes. Power-political, ethnic-nationalistic, economic and military-strategic aspects of the conflict are explored as alternative causes of the conflict. The article also provides an analysis of the conflict’s primary actors whose interests shaped the inter-state and intra-state characteristics of the conflict. The author concludes that the conflict in East Timor does not lend itself to an unambiguous classification with in conflict resolution theory, primarily due to the changes of the de facto territorial status of East Timor and the type of actors involved.
