Summary/Abstract: This is an introductory article to the late byzantine theological and philosophical problems. The complex relationship between philosophy and theology in medieval discourse is touched, afterwards turning to the focal problem of late byzantine intellectual life: the so called hesychastic controversy. A lot of attention is given to the overview of scholarly literature dealing with the hesychastic controversy, as well as editing the primary sources.
