Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to illustrate the personality of Transylvania’s vice-chancellor at Vienna, Samuel Kálnoki (1640-1706) as book owner and supporter of book publishing. The fi rst part of this work is a short presentation of Sámuel Kálnoki’s life and career. A second part shows his activity as a book editor, editing, supplementing and publishing Gergely Pethő’s Chronicle. By comparing his edition with the fi rst of the Chronicle from 1660, I was able to illustrate Kálnoki’s contribution to the work. This part of the article also presents the publications which appeared under his patronage, with his fi nancial support. The last part of the paper covers the Kálnoki family’s library, based on an inventory from 1761. The nucleus of this collection contains the books owned by Sámuel Kálnoki. By analyzing this inventory and identifying the majority of the books I was able to assign, with a degree of probability, some of them to the initial library of the vice-chancellor. The end of the article presents a fragment from his testament, in which he disposes of his personal belongings, among them being also his books.
