Summary/Abstract: This article deals with one of the stages (1872–1882) in the life and scientific work of A.S. Arkhangelsky, a professor at Kazan University and a prominent representative of Russian academic literary criticism. Based on documentary sources, we traced the formation of Arkhangelsky as a scholar, identified a set of people who influenced his views, and revealed how the philologists of Kazan, Moscow and Saint Petersburg interacted in the sphere of preparation of scientific manpower in Russian literature.
