Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of critical perception of the literary works and religious and philosophical views of L.N. Tolstoy by the Orthodox Church. The analysis focuses on the critical speech of Archbishop Nikanor (Brovkovich), dedicated to the writer’s famous novella “The Kreutzer Sonata”. It is considered how the teaching of Tolstoy, expressed in his work, was perceived and estimated by the critic. The compositional and stylistic peculiarities of Archbishop Nikanor’s article are also discussed.
