Summary/Abstract: Zamosc, native town of Rosa Luxemburg and a peart of Polish baroque, was a site of one of the transit ghettos in the so called Distrikt Lublin. Beside locals, also Czech Jews were deported here in spring 1942. The article analyses the activities and room for manoeuvre of the Zamosc Judenrat, which tried to save people before every “evacuation”, meaning mass shootings. In October 1942, all inhabitants were deported to the transit ghetto of Izbica and soon after murdered in Belzec and Treblinka. The Judenrat under the leadership of M. Garfinkiel helped several people escape the deportations, but at the same time, was much criticised by the survivors. Garfinkiel survived and lived on in the UK.
