Balkan Studies in Hungary

Summary/Abstract: Each era of the Balkan Studies in Hungary has had to deal with a unique set of questions surrounding research, institutions and, to a certain extent, education. In 1942, in an analysis of the institutional and organizational questions regarding Balkan Studies, Lбszlу Makkai expressed that such studies can only be undertaken efficiently within the confines of planned institutional development and he emphasized the importance of the role of universities, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, as well as state-funded organizations. Unfortunately, to this day, Balkan Studies in Hungary have experienced difficulties with institutionalization.
